Questions About Merchant Navy ?

How to join merchant Navy and Become Captain & Marine Engineer?

For Deck Department (to become a Captain):

  • Step 1: Appear for 12th and you need marks in PCM (minimum 60%) & English (minimum 50%).
  • Step 2: For sponsorship before joining DNS and B.Sc. (Nautical Science), you will have to fill separate shipping company's sponsorship forms and appear for their written exam and interview.
  • Step 3: Appear for IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test).
  • Step 4: Apply for BSc. (Nautical Science) or DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) through online IMU counselling (to join DNS you must have sponsorship from any shipping company. Without this you cannot join any college for DNS irrespective of your rank in IMUCET).
  • Step 5: Join a DG-approved maritime institute and complete your training.
  • Step 6: Go through sea-time training as a Deck Cadet.
  • Step 8: Pass competency exams and climb the ranks up to Captain.

For Engine Department (to become a Marine Engineer):

  • Step 1: Appear for 12th and you need marks in PCM (minimum 60%) & English (minimum 50%).
  • Step 2: Clear IMU-CET.
  • Step 3: Apply for B.Tech in Marine Engineering through online IMU counselling.
  • Step 4: Undergo onboard training as a Trainee Marine Engineer.
  • Step 5: Pass MEO (Marine Engineering Officer) exams to become a licensed officer and progress to Chief Engineer.
What is Merchant Navy & which type of job we have to do? how much we will be paid?

The Merchant navy is a crucial part of global trade that transports goods and passengers across international waters. It is an adventurous career for those who love the sea and travelling.

There are two major departments of work: Deck & Engine Department.

1. Deck department has :

  • Deck Cadet (entry-level) - basic stipend according to company
  • Third Officer - earns 1 to 2 Lakhs per month
  • Second Officer - earns 2 to 3.5 Lakhs per month
  • Chief Officer - earns 3 to 6 Lakhs per month
  • Captain (Master of the ship) - 7 to 12 Lakhs a month

On the other hand,

2. Engine Department has :

  • Engine Cadet (Trainee Engineer or Fifth Engineer)- basic stipend according to the company
  • Fourth Engineer- earns 1 to 2 Lakhs per month
  • Third Engineer- earns 2 to 3.5 Lakhs per month
  • Second Engineer- earns 3 to 7 Lakhs per month
  • Chief Engineer- earns 8 to 12 Lakhs per month

These figures may vary based on the company, type of ship, and experience.

About IMU-CET Campuses

The Indian Maritime University (IMU), headquartered in Chennai, was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university under the aegis of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The oldest of the IMU Campuses i.e. IMU Navi Mumbai Campus was established in 1927. IMU has 6 Campuses at Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. IMU conducts the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) every year on All India basis for admissions to its Programmes for IMU campuses and Affiliated Institutes. As per DGS Training Circular 12 of 2020, dated 01.04.2020, all Maritime Training Institutes [MTIs] regulated by DG Shipping are required to admit candidates on the basis of IMU-CET ranking and as amended from time to time. IMU- CET is mandatory for admission to DGS approved Programmes. Hence Candidates seeking admission in Pre-Sea Courses Diploma in Nautical Science, B.Sc. (Nautical-Science) and B.E/B.Tech. (Marine Engineering) to any MTI (Govt. or Private- Affiliated to any University) are required to qualify in IMU-CET.
